How to choose a game by house edge
Every casino game keeps a slice of what you wager over time - the house edge. It is the single most useful number when deciding what to play, because it tells you how expensive a game is per hour. The games above are not equal: choose carefully and the same bankroll can last several times longer.
The rough house-edge ladder
From cheapest to most expensive to play:
- Blackjack - around 0.5% with basic strategy, the lowest edge in the casino. It rises sharply if you play by feel, so learn the chart first.
- Baccarat - about 1.06% on the Banker bet. Skip the Tie bet, which costs over 14%.
- European roulette - 2.7% on every bet. The American double-zero wheel nearly doubles that to 5.26%, so avoid it when a European table is available.
- Slots - typically 2-8%, and the same title can ship at different RTP settings depending on the operator.
- Keno - often 20% or more. Entertaining, but the worst value on this page.
Why RTP matters
RTP (return to player) is the flip side of house edge: a 96% RTP slot carries a 4% edge. A slot paying 96.5% returns £13 more per £1,000 wagered than a 95.2% version of the same game - and operators can legally offer the lower setting. That is why we list RTP on every game card above and verify it in-game when we test casinos. Our guide to understanding RTP in slots shows you how to check the figure yourself, and our glossary covers house edge, variance and the other terms you will run into.
Play the demo first
Nearly every online slot and table game offers a free demo mode, and we favour using it before any deposit. Ten minutes of demo play tells you a game's pace, how often its bonus features land, and whether the variance suits your budget. For table games it doubles as strategy practice at zero cost. Our casino games guide goes deeper on strategy for each game, and if you do move to real money, set a deposit limit first - our responsible gambling page explains how.
