What Strategy Can and Cannot Do

Casino games fall into two camps, and knowing which one you are sitting at matters more than any individual tip. In skill-influenced games - blackjack, video poker and, to a degree, poker - your decisions change the house edge. In fixed-edge games - slots, roulette, baccarat - the maths is locked in before you press spin, and nothing you do at the table moves it.

Where skill genuinely helps

In blackjack, every combination of your hand and the dealer's upcard has one mathematically correct play. Learn the chart in our blackjack basic strategy guide and the edge on a decent six-deck table drops to around 0.5%. Play by gut feel and it can climb past 2% - roughly four times the cost per hour at the same stakes. Video poker works the same way: on full-pay machines, correct hold decisions push the return above 99%. Note the ceiling, though. Skill shrinks the edge; outside of card counting under conditions casinos rarely allow to last, it does not flip it in your favour.

Where it cannot help

A slot's RTP is fixed in its software, and every roulette spin is independent, so no staking pattern changes the 2.7% single-zero edge. That is why progression systems like the Martingale fail: they rearrange when you win and lose, not how much you lose on average - and table limits plus a finite bankroll guarantee the fatal losing streak eventually arrives. We work through the maths in our betting systems guide.

The part that is always in your control

  • Favour low-edge games and bets. The table above ranks them, and our RTP guide explains what the percentages actually mean.
  • Keep single bets to 1-2% of your session bankroll, so a normal run of variance cannot empty it in minutes.
  • Set a loss limit before you deposit and treat it as the price of entertainment. Our responsible gambling page covers deposit limits and self-exclusion tools.
